The Three Great Dimensions of the Blessings of Abraham

Three levels of the blessings of Abraham.

God called Abraham, blessed him and promised him that through him all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Therefore, the blessings of Abraham refer to the promises that God made to Abraham in the Old Testament.

Some of the key blessings that God promised to Abraham include: a son from his loins, a great nation, land inheritance, descendants and “spiritual” blessings. These blessings are significant because they are seen as the foundation of God’s covenant with His people and the precursor to the coming of Jesus Christ.

In this blog post, we will explore the three levels of the blessings of Abraham and how they are relevant to us today.

When God called Abraham, He blessed him. And the blessings upon Abraham transcended him.

“God had told Abram, “Leave your own country behind you, and your own people, and go to the land I will guide you to. If you do, I will cause you to become the father of a great nation; I will bless you and make your name famous, and you will be a blessing to many others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and the entire world will be blessed because of you.” Genesis 12:1-3

The blessing of Abraham can be seen in three different dimensions:

  • Personal level
  • National level
  • International level

Overall, the blessings of Abraham are seen as a sign of God’s faithfulness and love towards his people. They are also a reminder of the importance of faith and obedience in following God’s plan for our lives.

Let us take a look at how the blessings of Abraham impacted him at a personal level.

Personal level of the blessings of Abraham

God promised to bless Abraham and make his name great, so that he would be a blessing to others. The blessings of Abraham are seen as a sign of God’s favour and a promise of prosperity and abundance.

As you would agree with me, Abraham’s life was characterized by faith and obedience to God. He left his homeland as commanded by God and went on a journey of faith – trusting in God’s promises.

Abraham developed a personal relationship with God through his trust in God. As a result, his life was marked by various blessings worthy of mention.

For instance, God blessed him with a son in his old age, and his family grew and prospered.

Abraham’s faith in God allowed him to experience the blessings of God on a personal level, and the same is true for us. When we trust in God and follow His ways, we can experience the blessings of God in our lives.

Many people pray for the blessings of Abraham to be upon them and their families, asking for God’s favor and provision in their lives. They may also seek to live a life of faith and obedience, following the example of Abraham, in the hope of receiving these blessings.

Now that we have seen how the blessings of Abraham impacted his life at personal level, we will now proceed to a national level.

National level of the blessings of Abraham

The blessings of Abraham are often understood to be just the promises God made to Abraham. However, these promises were intended not only for him and his descendants, but also for the nation of Israel as a whole.

In Judaism, the Jewish people are seen as the direct descendants of Abraham and as the recipients of the blessings promised to him by God.

For instance, God promised Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession. This promise was fulfilled when the Israelites conquered and settled in the land of Canaan.

In modern day, Abraham is considered the father of the nation of Israel. God promised to make him a great nation, and this promise was fulfilled in the nation of Israel.

The Israelites are the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; they have a rich history and culture that continues to impact the world today.

Israel became a nation that God chose to bless and use to reveal Himself to the world. This was made possible through Abraham’s faith in God.

More so, God protected and sustained Israel throughout their history, and the nation continues to exist till now today.

In the Bible, the blessings of Abraham are often linked to the concept of a covenant between God and Israel, in which Israel is called to follow God’s laws and commandments in exchange for His blessings and protection.

So far, we have discussed how God’s blessings on Abraham impacted on him at both personal and national. We will now look at the implications of Abraham’s blessing at the international level.

International level of the blessings of Abraham

In Christianity, the blessings of Abraham are understood to be extended to all believers, regardless of their ethnic or national identity. This is the international dimension of the blessings of Abraham.

The blessings of Abraham are seen as extending to all nations through the fulfillment of God’s promise in Jesus Christ, whereby the blessing of salvation is brought to all mankind.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

Galatians 3:14, KJV

In other words, the blessing that God promised to Abraham extends beyond Israel and encompasses all the nations of the earth. God had promised “that through Abraham’s seed, all nations of the earth will be blessed”. This promise was fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

In Galatians 3:8-9, we read, “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.’ So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.”

Through Jesus Christ, people of all nations can experience the blessings of God and be reconciled to Him.

Conclusion

The blessings of Abraham are multi-faceted and impact us on three different levels: personal, national, and international.

Abraham’s faithfulness to God allowed him to experience the blessings of God on a personal level. Also. through Abraham’s descendants, the nation of Israel was established; and God used Israel to reveal Himself to the world. Finally, through Jesus Christ, people of all nations can experience the blessing of salvation and be reconciled to God.

Therefore, the blessings of Abraham are a testament to God’s faithfulness and love for all people. When we trust in God and follow His ways, we can experience His blessings in our lives, just as Abraham did.
