What Is The Right Attitude With Which To Follow God?

How is your attitude towards God?

By attitude, I refer to your “settled way of thinking or feeling about something” or someone – in this case, God.

Is it important how you feel or think about God? Yes, it is.

That means your attitude towards God shows us your settled way of thinking and feeling about Him.

If it is that important, what then is the right attitude that should guide the way you think and feel about God? The answer to that question is the focal point of this post.

Two conflicting attitudes

When it comes to following God, there is a right or wrong attitude. While the former brings positive results and rewards, the latter brings nothing but disappointment and frustration.

To distinguish between the two attitudes, I will draw from the words of Apostle James which he employed concerning the prayer of petition for heavenly wisdom.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord..  Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do…”

(James1:5-8, NIV)

The above verses talk about two conflicting attitudes that are possible when praying to God (for wisdom):

  • Attitude of doubt, and
  • Attitude of faith.

While one is the right attitude with which to follow God, the other is the wrong attitude.

The wrong attitude with which to follow God

Like the saying goes, “attitude is everything.” It is more so when it comes to walking with God.

Doubt is a bad attitude to display towards God.

If your attitude towards God is right, you will get it right in the way you relate with him. But if your attitude is wrong, things will not turn out well for you.

Why doubt is a bad attitude

According to Apostle James, the following are some of the reasons doubt is a bad attitude to put on while seeking God:

  • Doubt is a sign of personal instabilitythe one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
  • Doubt results in unanswered prayers the person that doubts should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
  • Doubt is also a sign of indecision or lack of focus the person that doubts is double-minded and unstable in all he does.

The right attitude with which to follow God

You have read from above that doubt is the wrong attitude with which to follow God. What then is the right attitude to follow Him?

The simple answer to that question in one word is ‘faith.’ That’s right: Faith is the right attitude with which to follow God because without faith it is impossible to please God.

Without faith, it is impossible to follow God.

God wants to direct you in life, but two things need to line up: You need to ask the right person, and you need to ask with the right attitude. The right person is God, and the right attitude is in faith—trusting him to provide the answer.

Rick Warren, Daily Hope

Why faith is the right attitude

Faith is the right attitude to wear because it is what pleases God. The writer of the book of Hebrews emphasised that point when he wrote that,

“… It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

(Hebrews 11:6, NLT).

Let me point out a few things from that passage of the scripture you just read:

  • You cannot please God without faith.
  • You cannot go to God except by faith.
  • For you to go to God, you must believe that He exists.
  • You must believe that God rewards those who sincerely seek Him.

Conclusion

Faith is the right attitude with which to follow, serve and worship God. Without faith, no one has what it takes to please God.

It matters what you think about God and the way you feel about Him. In other words, your attitude towards God is of utmost importance while following Him.

If you desire to please God, you must have the attitude of faith because you cannot please God without faith.

Doubt is the wrong attitude to have while faith is the right attitude. While faith is a godly attitude, doubt is not. As Kenneth W. Hagin observed,

“The attitude of faith looks at impossible situations the way God does. He sees every situation as possible! And we should never say something is impossible. We should say, “It’s possible with God.” That’s the attitude of faith.”
