If you are someone that likes to read a lot, you will often stumble on a book that will impact your life in a way you will never forget. Someone may just recommend a book to you at the right time when you need it. Or, perhaps you don’t even know you need it until you begin to read through the pages of the book. But there will always a be a book or two that leaves them most imprints in our hearts.
I feel fortunate to have come across some books in my life that impacted on me in more ways than one. One of such books is the subject of this post. So without further ado, you have to know I’m referring to:
Rick Warren’s Purpose-Driven Life
The Purpose-Driven Life by Pastor Rick Warren is one book that left positive indelible marks in my life. And I meant that with all my heart.
Apparently, I’m a not the only one in love with the book because over fifty million copies of it have been sold across multiple formats in over five dozen languages.
The first time I stumbled on that book, it was in the hands of my roommate at the NYSC camp following my undergraduate studies. The guy just returned with the book from an interstate trip where he attended a seminar with a theme along the line of discovering your purpose.
As I read the introductory part of the book, “What on earth am I here for?” I realised that I had to own a copy of that book for life. So within the next hour, I returned by friend’s copy to him and I ran to the nearest Christian bookstore to purchase mine.
Since then, I have read that book over and over again, making it a good reference material for me. And apart from the Bible, it is one book I have given out several free copies to people.
The book is full of insights regarding the reason God put us on earth, especially when you have placed your faith in Christ. Here is a quote from the book:
When we place our faith in Christ, God becomes our Father, we become his children, other believers become our brothers and sisters, and the church becomes our spiritual family. The family of God includes all believers in the past, the present, and the future. Every human being was created by God, but not everyone is a child of God. The only way to get into God’s family is by being born again into it. You became part of the human family by your first birth, but you become a member of God’s family by your second birth. God “has given us the privilege of being born again, so that we are now members of God’s own family.”– Rick Warren, The Purpose-Driven Life
You may think that I am hyping the book too much. Yes, I am. But it’s not because I was paid to do it (I wasn’t). It’s just that I love the book and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who cares to know the reason he or she was put here on earth.
The book talks about the purpose of your life. It emphasizes the point that you are not on earth by accident but that you were made for a purpose. Therefore, any meaningful searchfor the purpose you were made for should begin with your Maker.
In the Purpose-Driven Life, you will get to understand:
5 reasons you were put on earth
If you have ever asked the question, “Where am I here on earth?”, then The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren will help you understand the purpose of your life on earth. The extent to which you live for the purpose of your life is the extent of your fulfillment and eternal rewards.
Broadly speaking, Warren classified the purpose of your life into five categories:
- You Were Planned for God’s Pleasure, This means that you were created to worship God.
- You Were Formed for God’s Family – Every human being was created by God, but not everyone is a child of God. The only way to get into God’s family is by being born again into it.
- You Were Created to Become Like Christ – From the very beginning, God’s plan has been to make you like his Son, Jesus. This is your destiny and the third purpose of your life.
- You were shaped for serving God – You were put on earth to make a contribution. God designed you to make a difference with your life
- You Were Made for a Mission – God is at work in the world, and he wants you to join him. This assignment is called your mission. God wants you to have both a ministry in the Body of Christ and a mission in the world. Your ministry is your service to believers,’ and your mission is your service to unbelievers
The Purpose Driven Life is a brilliant book by Pastor Warren. If you have ever wondered why you were born, it’s a book you should check out. And I hope that the book will impact your life the way it impacted mine – even more.
