You Don’t Care If No One Reads Your Blog, Really?

getting people to read your blog

I’m certainly not the only one who has come across a few blogs whose authors claim they write for only themselves, that they don’t care if no one reads their blogs.

Really? How is that so? And I hope you are not like that?

If you don’t expect to be read, why do you have a blog? Or better still, why did you index your blog as ‘public’ instead of as “private”?

Doesn’t it sound unbelievable to say that you write a blog and you don’t care if people read it or not?

Just think about it for a minute. You don’t want something to be found, yet you display it in the open sunshine, publicly?

I know you are not like that, so let’s get it straight.

You should expect your blog to be read. That’s the minimum you deserve once you have taken the pain to increase the number of blogs on the blogosphere by setting up one and publishing on it.

It does not make common sense to say that you started your blog without caring if anyone reads it or not. Enough of that self-deception!

The mere fact that you published something online is proof enough that you would want it read.

Cristian Mihai of The Art of Blogging avers that it is a false statement for anyone to say that, “I write for myself. I don’t care if anyone reads my blog.”

His argument is that “If you weren’t interested in [having] readers, then you would write all your stuff on your computer, in a notepad, [and] keep it all under your bed or in a closet.”

That sounds funny but it is true. The moment you publish something online, you can be sure that some people will find it to read it.

So stop saying you don’t care if people read your posts or not because we know you care. If you don’t really care, then you should shut down your blog.

What do you think?

Lol I think when someone says that they don’t care if someone reads their blog, I think that many times they wish someone will read it but if no one does, they will still write. This was actually a funny and interesting post.

Thank you queen for reading and commenting. I’m glad you found the post funny and interesting. I agree with you, people write posts because they wish it read…

My take is that all of us want to be read. If I am writing and no one is reading, I should sit back and take stock of what I might not be doing right. Then continue writing again.

I want people to read my blog but I don’t mind if they don’t. I try and make my content something I am proud to share and I feel the world would like to hear but ultimately I’m writing for myself. I’m writing my book for myself and other victims.

That’s the spirit Keith. I want my blog read too. Thank you.

Good post, Victor. I don’t think I’ve ever read such a punchy post by you. But I understand people who say stuff like that, because I have felt that way and truly, I write for myself. Getting read isn’t my motivation for writing. Yes, I care whether people read it or not, like it or not, but I don’t write to be liked! I am commissioned to speak and write publicly by God and many won’t read, let alone like what I have to say.

It doesn’t mean that I should stop or change my content to please more people and gain readers. So, that’s what they mean when they say they write for themselves. Their primary motivation is internal and not external. People who write for readers, fame and money are VERY concerned with stats and will change their content to get the numbers. But people who are writing for themselves or as an expression of their Faith can not dance to that tune.

I hope I’m making sense. All that said, I would love more readers and followers and I care that people don’t read or comment on my blog. All the same, I write primarily for me, because “if I don’t write, I’ll die!” (it’s getting dramatic). Keeping it in my computer or closet is not an option, because it is like I never wrote it. It’s like keeping my thoughts in my head. It can drive you in sane. Saying it publicly can be therapeutic! And it’s still for you, primarily 😉

Thank you Ufuomae for the feedback. I appreciate all your points here. And you know I would agree with you on many fronts.

Just like it is with you, with me or any other person that writes a blog, there are many reasons we are writing. It’s therapeutic. Just sharing ones thoughts. Honing writing skills. Teaching. Etc.

These are splendid reasons to write a blog. But writing not to be read is definitely a contradiction. I guess that’s the point of the post.

Of course, I wasn’t talking about changing one’s writings to please people or for money. That doesn’t appeal to me too. I would rather not write than write anything that sells out my conscience.

Like you, my motivation for writing is internal. But Whatever reason we write blogs, it intrinsically includes the fact that we want to be read. That’s the reason we are glad when people give feedback on our write up.

Well written. While i am a player on both sides, the greater part of me write for myself and can care less if I gain followers. However, there is a part of me that writie to share my life in a way that will let others know that, it happens to not only you. I think naturally, we as humans keep our life so hidden because of shame and embrassment.

Most times people are only so open about the good and funny things of their life. But who really shares the truth behind what others cannot see. I like to write and so much has happened in my life and is happening. However, I only feel the need to share something that i’m going through but have either recongize it has a problem or issue. Or share something that I have dealt with. I choose this way because i want those who read my writing to feel that there is hope at the end.

I myself would not want to read something sad, and be in the same situation, and not see that there is a way out. For me just seeing one foot of traffic is enough for me to share. so yes, i agree with you to some point. But for me writing my words are not for fame but to pass on hope. While I hve not written in awhile. I myself am dealing with major life issues. But because of running across your post. Maybe you are a sign for me to write and share. So at least I can let you know that your words have reached me. so thank you so very much for your writing.

Thanks a lot for the contribution. Your points are quite clear.

It’s okay not to write for fame as you said, and for many other reasons. But the point of the post is that we all should write to be read, irrespective of the reason behind our write ups. Is that not why we have a public blog in the first place?

It is a noble objective to pass on hope with our writings but we can’t do that if no one reads us. That’s why I feel it is important to care if no one is reading our blogs. By caring I don’t mean worrying…like I said to an earlier commenter, it is a contradiction to have a public blog and expect not to be read.

In our actual world. In the lives that you and I live in day-to-day. As much as there is so much loving people in our circle, there is not one that fully gets that certain part of us. So like you and I, and so many others out there, we write and we share and we attract the many great minds that are out there across the world. I believe we have public blogging to unleash whatever it is that is within us that those around us don’t profit from. Doesn’t it make you feel better when I, a totally stranger take appreciation of your knowledge.

But if I was in your day-to-day life and you vocalize these very same words, guess what? Not only would I not be interested but, you probably wouldn’t have the guts to share them. I put my words into public blogging because I know someone will read it someday and I hope it helps in any form. But I public blog because one day someone who I love will one day want to know a part of me that they never knew. To my children I am nothing more than a mom. To my better half, I am noting more than a mother, friend, and partner. But to myself. I am so that and so much more.

But that so much more is hidden because I put my blessings of my family first. And that so much more doesn’t get to come out. But if I could be all I could be and doing all I could do, then maybe I would not write. But I do. And I’lll say it a thousand times. I wouldn’t care if I had no followers and no fame. I have something to say and so I write. Just like my thoughts of the all mighty. I talk to him out loud and I am not trying to attract an audience when I do. So because I do that, does that mean I should only talk to him in my thoughts? while I understand your point between private and public. I can only say that my life is private but the blessing to overcome or breakthrough makes me want to publicize it.

Certainly, I am grateful that you have taken time here to engage with me on my blog even though, as you put it, we are strangers to each other. That’s part of the beauty of blogging. It opens up vistas of interactions amongst people from diverse places around the world. And to me that’s a great thing.

Yes, people around us may not always appreciate us. But the truth is that we have much more to offer than they can see in the immediate present.

That’s why I feel personally, that beyond what we are to our friends and families and to those around us, we have much more blessings that can extend to people across the globe. I have thought about that very much in the recent past. That has given birth to an article, ” You are a citizen of the world” which will be published soon on this blog. You may watch out for it. Once again, thank you for your contribution.

Good Point Victor, I just thought I’d mention that I’m going to write a Post about you soon but I don’t want you to Read it or Comment on it, I’m writing it for me and yes I will make it Private but just to you.

You can be sure though that I don’t want anyone else to Read or Comment on it either but than if they want to I won’t stop them, not that I care if they don’t Read or Comment on it because as I said before I’m writing it for me but yes of course I will share it’s Link on their Blogs but only to be polite and because I try not to be selfish.

But than they are my thoughts about you Victor and they are very Personal but than if nobody knows they won’t know all about you and they will think I don’t Care, anyway their all waiting to find out about you so I can’t let them down can I Victor but than after all is said and done I am writing it for me!

Annie for sure has lost it!!!

You said it, Thank you is always enough Victor, well that is as long as you agree with me too even if you know I’m wrong but be warned Victor; if you don’t agree with what I say I will ignore your Comments or delete them and Block you too, after all it’s also just about Me when I Comment on Posts. But just so you will know Victor, I don’t really read what others are Posting about even if I do say I agree or I like what they shared, I don’t have time to read their Posts after all I have Computer games to play and Win and of course TV to watch but I do add a Like so they will Visit me and tell me how good my Posts are and also say I’m Spot On too even if I’m not! Lol.

Seriously Victor, I follow you because your a Christian Man of Integrity who doesn’t just say what others want to hear unless you really do agree and if you don’t agree you explain why and confirm with Scripture when needed, Thank you for being you Son, I Love you in Christ Jesus.

I think I know you better than that grannie mum: you read the comments of those who disagree with you. I can remember a number of times you have through your comments put things in perspective for some of my readers who showed lack of understanding in some of my posts. For that I remain grateful.

Of course I recognise that anyone’s comment can be blocked or deleted or ignored. But as for me, I have not seen the need to do so yet. I still welcome dissenting opinions on my blog. I feel that if I block anyone, I may lose the person permanently.

I have deleted some Comments on my Blog Victor and Moderated some others when needed or Blocked them when they have been Abusive or when they just kept rejecting Scripture for what they wanted to accept and believe in error. But with Atheists I’m like you I give them a chance to express their doubts and than share God’s Truth in a way they can understand, mostly it’s rejected but they are Prayed for and good seeds have been planted as thy were with me when I was a Atheist.

But when I first started Blogging Victor I was abused, slandered and received hate mail and I was also propositioned by a Married Man who had a Christian Blog but Thankfully when he realized I lived in Austral he lost interest but Ron still started Blogging with me for my Protection and yes we called it Ron’s Corner!

God’s Blessings Victor Now and Always – Grannie Mum.

It’s okay Anne. I get your point. Hate comments hurt, I have had a fair share too. But I have always resisted the temptation to have them deleted, especially if they’re originated from faceless readers. But then, I am coping; reminding me that not everyone will appreciate my activities on WordPress.
